The scheme “Janani Suraksha Yojana” was launched in 12th April 2025 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The scheme aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by promoting institutional delivery among poor pregnant women, and making available medical care during pregnancy, delivery, and post-delivery periods. The scheme provides 100% centrally sponsored cash assistance integrated with delivery and post-delivery care, focusing on increasing institutional and safe deliveries for Below Poverty Line families, and includes assistance for Caesarean sections or obstetric complications up to ₹1,500/- per case for hiring specialists.

Benefits

One-Time Cash Assistance for Institutional Delivery (Mother’s Package)

  • In Low Performing States (LPS): ₹1,400/- for rural areas and ₹1,000/- for urban areas.
  • In High Performing States (HPS): ₹700/- for rural areas and ₹600/- for urban areas.
  • North-Eastern States: ₹700/- (Mother’s package).

Note: Cash entitlement should be disbursed in one installment at the health institution. Money must be paid only to the beneficiary.

Cash Assistance for Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) Package

  • Referral transport: ₹250/- earmarked.
  • Facilitating institutional delivery: Not less than ₹200/- per delivery.
  • Total Package (Rural): ₹600/- (includes ₹300 for antenatal and ₹300 for facilitating delivery).
  • Total Package (Urban): ₹400/- (includes ₹200 for antenatal and ₹200 for facilitating delivery).

Cash Assistance for Home Delivery

₹500/- per delivery for BPL pregnant women, regardless of age and number of children.

Assistance for Caesarean Section or Management of Obstetric Complications

Up to ₹1,500/- per delivery utilized by the health institution to hire services of specialists.

Comprehensive Maternal and Newborn Care (JSSK objectives)

  • Free and Cashless Delivery (Normal and Caesarean).
  • Free Drugs and Diagnostics.
  • Free Provision of Blood and Diet.
  • Free Transport (To/From/Referral/Drop-back).

Other Services

  • Compensation for Sterilization.
  • Antenatal Care (ANC): Identification, 3 check-ups, TT injections, IFA tablets.
  • Postnatal Care (PNC): Visit within 7 days, breastfeeding counseling.
  • Newborn Immunization: Arrangements for BCG and follow-ups.

Eligibility

For Institutional Delivery

  • Must deliver in a government health centre or accredited private institution.
  • Low Performing States (LPS): All pregnant women eligible if delivering in govt/accredited private institution. No BPL/marriage certification required.
  • High Performing States (HPS): Must be from BPL household or SC/ST.

For Home Delivery

  • Must be from a Below Poverty Line (BPL) household with certificate.

Application Process

Offline

  • Step 1: Identification: ASHA/ANM registers the pregnant woman 20-24 weeks before delivery.
  • Step 2: Card Filling: Maternal and Child Health card is issued in duplicate.
  • Step 3: ANC Planning: Link worker informs about check-ups and TT injections.
  • Step 4: Proof Collection: Assisting in collecting BPL/SC/ST certificates.
  • Step 5: Verification: JSY card submitted to Medical Officer of PHC.

Documents Required

  • During Application: BPL Certificate, SC/ST Certificate, Maternal and Child Health Card.
  • During Disbursement: JSY Card, Referral Slip, Admission Slip For Delivery, Vouchers.

Help & Support: Grievance redressal cells are established at the District level.
